Sensory play/boxes have play a very important role in Montessori education philosophy. Sensory bins -or boxes- are the places in which the objects that appeal to as many senses as possible are put.

Ocean Sensory Bin

The main aim is to appeal to the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. These pools stimulate the senses of children and helps them to touch the various tissues and learn lots of notions. They help to sensitize the senses but at the same time contribute to the developing of fine motor skills since it includes the actions of transfer.

Required Materials

• Water
• Various sea animals
• Coloured rocks
• Seashells
• Sea products like moss… etc.

How to do it?

First of all, put all of the materials like seashells, sea animals, mosses, rocks and etc. in a wide plastic box.

It is up to you and your child what else to put in. You can design it as you like.

Secondly, pour water in the box according to its size.

Lastly, put the box in the deep freezer.

Time to wait. The sensory play will be ready after it totally freezes:))

Think about the ocean you put before your child. 😊 It really worths to see a child’s excitement when he first saw the ocean he had made by his own or the excitement while he was trying to catch the frozen animals. 😊 Time’s up! It is time to play with our sensory bin now! 😊

You should teach the “cold” notion to your child as touching it. Then you may sprinkle salt to dissolve it, it would be very exciting for children. We prepared this sensory play in our activities related to the star shape, under the title of “starfish”. We saved the starfish after sprinkling salt.
